The TP series, which is also called the Dyson Pure Cool, has a built-in air purifier with a "HEPA" filter that Dyson says only needs to be changed once a year. When you connect your Pure Cool to Dyson's Link app, you can check the indoor air quality by tracking the levels of four types of air pollutants: particulate matter in two sizes (2.5 and 10 microns), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nitrogen dioxide.
Three sensors on the base of the Pure Cool keep track of these levels. One sensor is an optical sensor that uses an infrared light source to look for particles. A pollen particle might be 10 microns wide, while a molecule of cooking gas is 2.5 microns wide. Another sensor checks for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs can be harmless, like the smell of a flower, or dangerous, like the fumes from fresh paint in a room with no ventilation. Nitrogen dioxide can cause infections in the lungs, and it usually gets into the air when fossil fuels are burned. A third sensor checks the temperature and humidity of the room.
We love technology, but the newer models of the TP series were too expensive for us. Instead, we chose to test the TP01, which cost $400, to see how it compared to the old AM07.
The Dyson – TP01 is a lot like the Dyson – AM07. It has 10 speeds that can be easily changed by hand by holding down the power button, which gradually increases the airflow. The remote control for the TP01 does the same thing, but you can also set how long the fan will run at a certain speed. You can magnetically attach the remote to the top of the unit so it doesn't get lost or mixed up with other remotes.
We tested the Dyson-TP01 for a full week, running it 24 hours a day in a 155-square-foot bedroom. Then, we tested it on and off in a living room/dining room that had an odd shape and was about 400 square feet.
Since there isn't much airflow on levels 1 through 3, they are only meant to remove low amounts of dust from a room that is mostly empty. In the bedroom, though, the cooling at level 3 worked pretty well. The Dyson worked better in the smaller room as a whole. Even though Dyson says that the TP series can cool a big, open room, we did not find that to be true. Like other Dyson fans, it can only oscillate at an angle of 70 degrees, which was fine for the bedroom. You can only control it with a remote. In the living room, on the other hand, even at its highest setting, the fan did almost nothing to cool the room.
When we tested tower fans before, the AM07 had only a small amount of airflow at 6.3 mph, while the cheap Seville had a speed of 8.0 mph. Dyson must have made changes to the TP01's design, because the airflow was much stronger at 7.8 mph. (We were interested in how the design of the upper body affected airflow, so we took it off and got a reading of 24.6 mph.)
As we said in our review of the AM07, the thing that sells the Dyson is how quiet it is. The AM07 measured 61 dB, while the TP01 measured 63 dB, which is a bit higher. So Dyson made the TP01 faster at moving air, but it's about as loud as its older model.
In our tests, the Dyson's highest speed setting made the air move almost as fast as the best air purifier. That's why it helps cool things down. But the Winix's bigger fan moves 40 percent more air than the Dyson's, 393 cubic feet per minute vs. 275. In tests, a Dyson took about four times longer than a $130 Winix to improve the air quality by the same amount. The TP01 also doesn't have an air-quality sensor like its strongest competitors. You have to pay $100 more for the TP02 to get a sensor and Wi-Fi-based control.
Even with the filter off, the Dyson's lowest speed setting didn't make enough pressure to fill the plastic bag we were using to measure air volume. Because the air multiplier is so well made, there is a light breeze, but it won't make much of a difference in the air quality unless you turn it up. For our low-speed test, we turned the Dyson up to the fourth setting, which gave us the same airspeed as the Winix on its lowest setting.
The Dyson will work well enough to get rid of dust in a small bedroom, but so will many other air purifiers that cost less than a quarter of its price.
